JALINGO, Nigeria: Witnesses and the Nigerian Red Cross say an explosion has struck near government buildings in Nigeria’s Taraba state, causing injuries.
The blast happened Monday morning at a road junction near the offices of the Taraba state governor. A report from the Nigerian Red Cross said some people were hurt in the blast and taken to nearby hospitals.
Police declined to immediately comment as officers surrounded the road junction.
Nigeria’s largely quiet Taraba state borders Cameroon. Jalingo is the state capital.
Bomb and gun attacks Sunday on Christians attending church services in Nigeria’s north killed at least 21 people.
SAHARA UPDATE:
A police spokesperson in Abuja has dismissed the claims from eyewitnesses in Taraba that three of its members were killed in a bomb attack earlier today.
CSP Frank Mba who is the deputy force public relations officer in Abuja told SaharaReporters over the phone that the explosion in Taraba state was a roadside bomb planted by militants on Kebbi Road in Jalingo, the state capital.
CSP Mba stated that the improvised explosive device went off close to the convoy of the state police commissioner around 8:25 AM as he made it to work.
Two of the assailants died in the explosion while a third was shot dead by the police according to the police PRO. He also revealed that a police outrider was slightly injured, and he is currently hospitalized in Jalingo.
Mr. Mba also dismissed rumors that there are synchronized attacks in Adamawa and Gombe states. He said those states remain calm as at the time of speaking with our reporter.
